Using pictures of someone else was a favourite ruse of guys in Rome. It usually meant they didn’t want their wife to find them online. But I couldn’t understand why they would choose a better looking stand in - why launch the date on a base of confusion, disappointment and regret?

It’s a funny one with online dating! I’ve been “catfished” twice now, this being the first time. Guessing you’ve had some experience of this in Rome? Did you live in Italy for a little while?
Yes I lived in Rome for a few years. I’ve had experience of online dating in Melbourne, Geneva and rural France as well. Cultural variations made for good stories but no lasting love stories 😆 Out of that group, only Romans used fake photos, but then Swiss and French are inclined to use no personal photos at all (don’t get that), or very old photos. The Swiss and alpine French use lots of sporty photos (lycra!)
There are some strange people out there. Can't blame him for a taking a punt, but a bit dim to think it wasn't going backfire. I did get a bit anxious with some of those messages and wondered if it was going to end badly, even more badly. Enjoyed the read, especially the humour you injected into it. Get a real sense you found your stride as a writer, can't wait to see what you post next.
Thanks Stephen! I remember it well. It wasn’t a particularly scary experience (it wasn’t the first ‘bad date’ I’d had but it was the first time I’d been semi-catfished!) Northern humour is my comfortable place but I do want to try and push myself with my writing skills in the near term too 😃 thanks again for supporting, it means a lot!
